Bacteria have alternated into resistant superbugs, and unfortunately, the pharmaceutical companies are powerless. However, a group of researchers from the Ethiopia`s College of Medicine found that you don’t necessarily have to unite with Big Pharma in the fight against diseases, that practically, it created.
The combination of ginger powder extract and honey prevents the growth of superbugs, such as E Coli and MRSA, and bacteria that cause pneumonia. Some of the most dangerous superbugs are the following:
- Klebsiealla Pneumoniae
- Escherichia Coli
- MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus)
When the combination of honey and ginger powder extract was compared to three different antibiotics in terms of their potency of killing superbugs, the natural combination notably won over the antibiotics. “Conclusion: The result of this study showed that honey-ginger powder extract mixtures have the potential to serve as cheap source of antibacterial agents especially for the drug resistant bacteria strains.”

The superbugs were exposed to these “broths” and every single one was cultured for 20-24 hours. The researchers conducted five tests for each treatment of the bacteria:
- Klebisiella Pneumoniae
- Escherichia Coli ( two different strains)
- Staphylococcus Aereus ( MRSA and non-MRSA)
The natural combination of ginger and honey proved to be more effective in preventing bacteria growth in comparison to the three antibiotics. The only antibiotic that came close to these results was the amoxicillin.
The duo averaged an inhibition level of 25.62, which ranged from 19 to 30. It showed much better results than any of the pharmaceutical solutions.
Moreover, the ginger extract doesn’t require any complex process. All you need to do is to dry some sliced ginger root pieces at 36 degrees for 24 hours, just like the researchers did. The researchers then grounded and blended some methanol and ethanol, and the result was 50% solution. Then, this solution was blended with equal part of honey.
Speaking of the aforementioned water solution of ginger, it didn’t provide the same results. It was put to the test in another research, and it was shown that alcohol extracts the potent antibiotic substances found in ginger.
