An ear infection occurs when a bacterial or viral infection affects the middle ear—the sections of your ear just behind the eardrum. Ear infections can be painful because of inflammation and fluid build up in the middle ear. For instance, a common cold can lead to a build-up of mucus in the middle ear and causes the Eustachian tube (a thin tube that runs from the middle ear to the back of the nose) to become swollen or blocked.
Earache and diminished hearing are the main symptoms and they can occur in one or both ears.
Hearing problems can occur due to chronic ear infection and long term problems related to ear infections.
Ear infection happens most commonly to children and those who are younger than six months are have fever or ear infection should definitely see a doctor. If your child has a fever higher than 102 degrees or severe ear pain, always seek medical attention.
