Here’s the scary fact – the effect of genetically modified foods on the human body has never been scientifically assessed – but 80% of our packed foods contain DNA-manipulated ingredients.
To make matters worse, genetically modified food is not labeled as such, which complicates efforts to avoid them. The request for labeling such food is discarded by the giant food producers.
Scientists genetically modify crops to improve plant resistance to pests, to increase the yield and reduce the time of ripening. The problem is that we do not know the effects of these foods on our health, because there are no published results of a survey on the impact of that kind of food on the human body and health.
“Research has not been made, so now we have become guinea pigs. Anyone who says, “We know that the food is perfectly safe” – is incredibly stupid or is deliberately lying, “said Canadian geneticist David Suzuki.
Jason Mud, a nutritionist who studied at Harvard and Yale, co-author of the book “Rich food, poor food” with his wife Mira who is also a nutritionist, highlights the potential dangers of GMO products.
Their advice is to stick to organic, fresh foods or those that are grown locally, and to avoid GMO products. Remember that industrially produced milk, meat and fish are often derived from animals fed with GMO corn, alfalfa or soybeans.
Although GMO products are not labeled, the Caltons say there is a trick that can help you identify the GMO fruits and vegetables. Look for the number on the product label, which is called PLU (Product Lookup Number). If PLU’s four-digit number starts with 3 or 4, it means the product is not GMO, but has been grown on a farm that used chemicals and pesticides.
If the label has five digits beginning with 9, it means the product is organic, grown without chemicals, pesticides or genetic modification.
“You can buy these foods without having a doubt,” said the mud.
However, products marked with a five-digit number beginning with 8 are GMO crops.
“They are unnaturally bred using genetic modification.”
Given the fact that GMO products are widespread and common, and are not labeled, it is almost impossible to avoid them completely. However, the following fruits and vegetables are rarely genetically modified: onions, pineapple, avocado, peas, asparagus, mangoes, eggplant, kiwi, cantaloupe, cabbage, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, watermelon and mushrooms.
The following products have a far greater chance of being genetically modified: apples, celery, peppers, peaches, strawberries, nectarines, grapes, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, blueberries, potatoes, green beans, kale, oranges, corn, zucchini, cherry and hot peppers.
